Health Canada’s Plain Language Labelling initiative is well under way for drug products in Canada. Although the program was introduced several years ago, it has only been since June of 2017 that compliant labels were required to accompany all drug applications submitted to Health Canada.

The goal of the plain language label (PLL) program is to maximize safe use of drug products in Canada by ensuring that labels contain plain and easy-to-view language as well as adequate directions for use. Labels that are crowded with information, or have confusing instructions often lead to medication errors. Gluing, as one of the most efficient methods of bonding, is constantly expanding into new areas of application. The substrate properties (board + finishing) and the processing conditions will influence the processes of joining and bonding.

Can one adhesive work with any application? Unfortunately not, it is not a "One size fits all". There’s a reason there are more than 300 different PSAs in the adhesives industry. Specific applications require label developers to create PSAs with specific performance properties, which can be achieved using several basic components.

Choosing the right and proper Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA) is essential to the success of the removable folding carton flap. When evaluating PSAs for Removable and Repositionable applications, we should look at three primary performance properties: Peel, tack and shear. Adhesive manufacturers vary the amounts of peel, tack and shear to meet the requirements of specific applications.

Cure time of a hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive is dependent upon temperature, humidity, porosity of substrate, substrate finishing (varnish, lamination), the amount of adhesive used and the gluing speed.

Working closely with our partners: adhesive suppliers, hot melt equipment applicator and varnish suppliers; we have conducted several trials on our Bobst Folding Gluer (VISIONFOLD 80 A2) and we have come up with the right recipe for PLL applications!
